Nephrology
Patient care services offered
The Department of Nephrology in our college was established as early as 2005 with a single dialysis machine. Over the years it has grown into a full-fledged department providing comprehensive nephrological care to the patients. We now deliver quality nephrological care to patients from rural areas of Puducherry and Cuddalore district of Tamilnadu.
The Department is managed by a highly proficient qualified team of nephrologists, with skilled nursing and paramedical staffs.
The services we provide include:
- Clinical Nephrology
- Hemodialysis(Both Acute and Maintenance Hemodialysis)
- Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD)
- Renal Biopsy
- Critical care nephrology
- Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)
- Plasmapheresis
Clinical Nephrology
The Department provides state of the art clinical care for a wide range of Kidney diseases. The faculty has expertise in every area of nephrology including Acute and Chronic Kidney Diseases, Glomerulonephritis, Cystic Kidney Disease, and Metabolic disorders.
Hemodialysis Unit
We have well-equipped Hemodialysis unit with state of art dialysis machines, which is managed by well-trained dialysis technicians and staffs. As of now, we have seven dialysis stations providing round the clock dialysis services to the needy patients. Eligible patients are given maintenance dialysis at free of cost under Tamilnadu Government’s Medicare program. Patients live normal lives except for the time needed for dialysis.
Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD)
We encourage CAPD, which is the home-based dialysis therapy for patients with end-stage Kidney disease. CAPD is preferred for patients with vascular access problems and severe cardiac disease. CAPD catheters are inserted at the bedside through percutaneous technique by trained nephrologists. Patients are taught to perform exchange procedure and how to cope with problems during dialysis by experienced PD nurse. Patients are well explained about exit site care of abdominal catheter to avoid any source of infection. People on CAPD visit Dialysis unit once a month.
Renal Biopsy
Kidney biopsies for various indications including nephrotic syndrome, rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis, and acute glomerulonephritis are done. Kidney biopsy samples are prepared with modern technique and examined by dedicated nephron-pathologist.
Critical Care Nephrology
We provide nephrology care and extracorporeal therapies like CRRT, SLED, and plasmapheresis to critically ill patients.
The Department provides nephrology training to The Postgraduates from Department of General Medicine. The department is also involved in active research in various areas of nephrology. We intend to start DM Nephrology program as early as possible.
The Department along with Management and other departments is in the process of acquiring permission for Renal Transplantation. We hope to start Renal Transplantation in the near future.
