General Surgery is one of the major departments in Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Puducherry. It has been around since the inception of the institute (2001) and over the period has grown into a large force boasting academically renowned professors, competent faculty, well equipped operating theatre, and an endoscopy suite. It now caters to a large population base in and around Pondicherry and the Tamil Nadu States. It is also one of the premier referral centers in this area.

Providing patient care in the out-patient department from Monday to Saturday and emergency services 24 hours day. We provide patient care to all types of cases who are directly attending our hospital and referred from other places and all major surgical procedures are performed in our hospital.

The department is equipped with a well-furnished operating theatre. The patients are operated on an elective basis on all working days. The procedures range from Hernioplasty through Mastectomy, Thyroidectomy to major surgeries such as Abdominal Perineal resection and Whipple’s procedure, and Laparoscopic procedures like laparoscopic Cholecystectomy and Appendicectomy and Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair and Sex Reassignment Surgery(SRS) are performed routinely.

The department also accepts patients from the Casualty 24×7. If any surgical procedure is deemed necessary, it is performed on the same day. The faculty on duty are available round the clock.

The Department runs Weekly specialty clinics on Diabetic foot/breast clinic / Transgender clinics and Surgical Gastroenterology / Cancer clinics /Palliative care clinic which promote multi-disciplinary management in identifying the disease and treatment protocol. We also manage a full-fledged Palliative Care ward where patients are referred from Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu and End of Life Care (EOLC) is also given
