Health for all by 2000AD. All over the world, the welfare program is oriented to achieve comprehensive family health care. In all the developed and developing countries in spite of tremendous Scientific and Medical advancement, are still coping with certain health care problem which is inherited or due to catastrophic environmental factors. Now the etiology of many diseases are looked on the genesis of genetic factors. Last 3 – 4 decades the development of Genetics and its application in the clinical practice is tremendous and paves a pathway to understanding the basics and diagnosis of certain disorders.

Today some health care unit is equipped with a fully developed Cytogenetic unit to study the chromosomal aberration – structural and numerical which are the hazards due to age factor, radiation, autoimmune disorders, etc. MCI has made it mandatory in a teaching hospital for an established Cytogenetic lab.

Puducherry is the only Union Territory proud to have 8 Medical institutions, to train health professionals. Apart from JIPMER, MGMC & RI is the first private institution in and around Puducherry to have established a Cytogenetic lab to cater the needs of the clinical department to diagnose Chromosomal disorders like  Ambiguous sex disorders, Turners Mosaics, etc. This facility has been extended to the other Medical institution / General Hospital / Private Nursing Home so that they could utilize the lab service for Karyotype as clinical diagnosis and for further counseling.

Puducherry is now becoming a Cosmopolitan city growing with many industries, factories & educational institutions, thus the environmental factors may be the causative factors for many genetic disorders. The population survey in and around Puducherry may help to categorize some of the existing disorder and go on the outlook of genetic disorders. Since environmental and hereditary are operational in population genetics, distribution, etiology and due to some heritable diseases like Sickle cell Anemia, Thalassemia, Haemophilia A, Muscular Dystrophy may be studied and controlled measure could be ascertained. The Cytogenetics lab has geared up the scientific temper in the minds of the medical students, which is very much evident as it got two ICMR – STS projects and was successfully completed with due publications in Scopus & Pubmed indexed journals. The lab now has planned for other faculty funded projects to study the genetic disorders of the people living in the unsafe affected area serving the cause of humanity at the community level in and around Puducherry.

We do the karyotyping for the patients for academic significance, catering to the needs of various clinical departments in regard to any  Cytogenetic disorders.  The cytogenetic topic has been included in the dissertation work of Post Graduates in medical and dental colleges.

Cytogenetic investigations as a clinical diagnosis for nearly 160 patients and genetic counseling done for cases referred from the clinical departments of MGMCRI since 2008.
