Mortuary

Overview

  • The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (FMT) has a state of the art mortuary in accordance with the guidelines of the Medical Council of India (MCI), within the college campus..
  • Mortuary block is provided with student observation facility of Gallery type. It occupies 40 – 50 students (one batch) at a stretch for teaching purpose.
  • The mortuary is available with all modern equipment necessary for demonstration of live autopsy. It is ensured that following sufficient facilities are found as per requirement.
    1. Lighting
    2. Water supply
    3. Drainage
    4. Ventilation
    5. Fly proofing
    6. Exhaust facilities
  • Cold Room / Cooling Cabinets are available and equipped with instruments for conducting postmortem. A separate room is used for preservation of viscera and body fluids. The preservatives for preserving viscera such as sodium chloride, sodium fluoride, rectified spirit and thymol are found available. The Mortuary also offer services to keep the bodies which are voluntarily donated (Voluntary body donation). Dead bodies from Department of Emergency Medicine are kept in cold chambers (4 degree C) in following circumstances like
    1.  Natural deaths
    2. Unnatural deaths (MLC deaths)
    3. For preservation purpose when the bodies need to be transported for a longer distance after getting authorization from Registered Medical Officer (RMO) / CMO.
  • Rooms for faculties and attenders are provided in the mortuary block. Place for police inquest and public waiting are provided.

OBJECTIVES

  • To handle the dead bodies (Cadaver) due respect
  • To give full co-operation to the relatives of the dead / deceased while handing over the dead bodies (Cadavers)

GOALS

  • To carry out medico-legal work and perform autopsies for determination of the cause, manner of death etc. 
  • To impart training to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of the practical aspects of Forensic Pathology, Forensic Toxicology (death due to poisoning, viscera and sample collection and preservation, proper labeling and sealing of sample and hand out formalities to the law enforcing agencies).

MORTUARY FACILITIES

  • Provision for fetal autopsy for the academic purpose in coordination with departments of
    1. Pathology
    2. Paediatrics
    3. Obstetrics and Gynecology.
  • Weapon examination in case of assault when required by police.
  • Examination of skeletal remains for identification purpose.
