Physiology literally means knowledge of nature (physis, nature; logos, discourse). Medical physiology concentrates on the function of human body, basis of understanding diseased states and their treatment. The department of physiology was started in the year 2001 when the medical college was established to start the MBBS course. It was upgraded as a postgraduate department in 2009. In 2011 permission was granted to offer a post-doctoral course.  Imparting knowledge of physiology to paramedical courses for dentistry, nursing, lab technicians and radiographers also come under departments purview.

The department is dedicated to the highest quality in undergraduate, postgraduate, postdoctoral training, research, and medical education.  It has a well structured dynamic program for undergraduate and postgraduate students which inculcates critical and logical thinking. The program includes lectures, tutorials, focused exercises, laboratory practicals and demonstrations. Clinical departments participate actively to stress upon the pathological aspects of organ systems. Yoga has been introduced which familiarize students to holistic medicine. The program is supervised by qualified staff with a passion for teaching. Academic and extracurricular performances of students are closely monitored with a strong mentorship program encouraged by the institution.

Postgraduate students are encouraged to take on research projects other than their thesis, present their work in conferences and publish it. They are trained to adopt good teaching-learning methods to make them better teachers and responsible persons. The department develops researchers and competent health professionals who are creative thinkers and innovators capable of generating new knowledge.

Regular feedback is taken from students to assess the teaching-learning methods employed and improvise on them.
