Orthopaedic Physiotherapy
Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy is the term used to describe the field of physiotherapy, which relates to disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The term musculoskeletal refers to muscles, bones, joints, nerves, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and spinal discs.
Orthopaedic physical therapyÂ
Includes treatment of the musculoskeletal system (which is made up of the muscles and bones of the body) that has been subject to injury or trauma. Various types of disorders and injuries affecting our muscles, bones, and joints.
The Orthopaedic physiotherapy service includes elective orthopaedic surgery (Total knee replacement, Total hip replacement and any other planned orthopedic procedure), trauma orthopaedics (fracture Neck of femur, lower limb fractures and upper limb fractures). Any patient in the hospital who is under an orthopedic consultant will be reviewed and treated by the ortho physio team.
Treatment will be designed to encourage patients to achieve their rehabilitation potential and promote independence where appropriate.
The ortho physio team fully liaise with all other members of the multi disciplinary team, and are integral in helping to organise, coordinate safe and effective discharge packages. This can also include liaison with the community physio team to ensure continuity of care for the patient.
Neurology Physiotherapy
 Neurological physiotherapy involves the treatment of people with movement and function disorders that have originated from problems within the body’s nervous and neuromuscular system. These conditions often manifest themselves as muscle weakness, poor balance and coordination, uncontrolled muscle spasm and tremors, loss of function and decreased sensation. Common neurological conditions include:
- Functional Neurological Disorders
- Stroke, CVA or TIA
- Spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson’s disease
In Hospital Physiotherapy
Acute neurological conditions, such as a stroke, spinal injury or traumatic brain injury, often present to hospital for immediate treatment. Depending on the symptoms and condition, The doctor may request physiotherapy treatment. Physiotherapist will undertake a comprehensive assessment of strength, coordination and balance and will then tailor a treatment program for unique needs. Depending on the impairment, physiotherapy treatment may include:
- Passive Limb Exercises: voluntarily unable to move your arms and legs
- Positioning / Splinting: correct limb positioning, or splint prescription, to ensure that your joints don’t tighten
- Bed Exercises:Â to stretch and strengthen your muscles
- Breathing and Circulation Exercises:Â to prevent respiratory and vascular complications such as chest infection and DVTs
- Mobilisation:Â assistance to move safely in bed, sit up, stand and walk
- Mobility Aids:Â prescription, advice and instruction on how to safely use a walking frame, or other walking aids as required
- Discharge Planning:Â information regarding any necessary equipment that you may require at home after discharge
- Tailored Exercise:Â exercises to build strength, endurance, coordination and balance
After Hospital
Following patient discharge from hospital, patient can visit an Neuro physiotherapy unit where a Physiotherapist will continue to support rehabilitation. Neurological physiotherapy treatment may include hands-on therapies, specific exercise prescription and a home exercise program. Some people with neurological conditions require additional support, high levels of care and specialized equipment – Physiotherapist can guide to the most appropriate services and organizations, so that Patient can receive the support they need.Â
Cardio vascular & Pulmonary Physiotherapy Department [OPD] provide General Chest Evaluation, Cardiac fitness care, Cardio vascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program.
Inpatient Cardio Pulmonary Department [IPD] has an essential role in restoring function in patients requiring critical care by using conservative, non invasive approaches. It provides specialized care with the view of ultimately returning individuals suffering from cardiac or respiratory conditions to a healthy and productive life. This department provide comprehensive physical assessments and individualized rehabilitation therapy sessions for patients who are admitted in Casualty & Emergency care unit , ICU., MICU., SICU., NICU., PICU., Surgery (male & female) ward, medicine (male & female) ward, It meets the personal requirements of the critical care unit of Mahatma Gandhi medical college and Hospital which has life support equipments like Advanced Ventilator, Defibrillator, Electrocardiogram monitor, Arterial and Venous Lines, Pulse Oxymeter, Oxygen Transport, Monitoring of Fluids, Electrolyte balance, Suction Apparatus, Nebulizer.etc.,
