Value added course

A value added course on “First aid and CPR- Hands on Training” was conducted by the MSC for the School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS), School of Pharmacy (SOP) and Institute of Salutogenesis & Complementary Medicine (ISCM) students during the period of January 2024-December2024. The Course was attended by both faculty of SAHS, SOP and students of SAHS, SOP & ISCM. Totally 7 courses were attended by 210 students and 12 faculty. They had hands on training in the identification and providing initial steps in the management of various medical, surgical and orthopaedic emergencies. They were assessed for their performance and certificate was issued. The course was graded as very informative and useful by the participants.

A total no.of 34 dental interns were trained for Handling of Medical emergencies. The program was planned as per a request from the Department of Prosthodontics of IGIIDS. It was felt that dental interns need training to provide immediate treatment for critical medical emergencies. Fourteen emergencies were identified by the IGIDS faculty for which a reference manual was prepared with inputs from the corresponding clinical departments. The interns would be first trained in the skills that were needed to participate in these scenarios, namely IV cannulation and CPR. Subsequently 9 out of the 14 scenarios were chosen for large group classroom discussion and 5 were chosen for hands-on practice sessions. Of these 5, types of shock were planned as small group case-based discussions and seizures, anaphylaxis and cardiogenic shock were planned as simulation scenarios with debriefing. Assessment of knowledge and skill was planned by pre /posttest and OSCE stations.
Impact on implementation:
The participants of the first course were thirty-eight dental interns who formed the subjects for the pilot study after informed consent. Knowledge component tested by pre, and posttest show an improvement of mean score of 6.83/15 to 9.16/15. Technical Skill acquisition assessed by OSCE revealed 95% learners fulfill the pass criteria. Ninety percent students expressed the sessions and handouts were useful, around 80% that they were provided with enough information and training on the medical emergencies and 80% expressed overall satisfaction with the program. The majority of students expressed the need for more hands-on practice. Based on the pilot study, a larger scale study protocol has been designed and will be submitted to the IHEC for ethical clearance.
