Psychiatry
Courses
Undergraduate Training
Apart from periodic lecture classes on academic and clinical psychiatry, the department conducts regular clinical teaching exercises for undergraduate MBBS students (as batches) on a 15-day rotational basis. The fundamental aim of teaching Psychiatry to our undergraduate medical students is to impart knowledge and skills that would enable the student to diagnose and treat common mental disorders, handle psychiatric emergencies, and make decisions regarding referral to a specialist. We help the medical student acquire an optimal attitude towards mental health, mental illness, and patients suffering from mental disorders. In addition, our department plays a vital role in the development & implementation of the communication skills curriculum of the university.
Postgraduate Training
Postgraduate training in the Department of Psychiatry is designed to enable the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the competent and ethical practice of evidence-based psychiatry in a variety of service settings. Training in pedagogy & research methodology is provided too. Some of our faculty are regular resource persons at the annual institute-level dissertation workshops for the 1st year & final year postgraduate students.
Nursing & Allied Health Sciences
The Department of Psychiatry plays an active role in the psychiatric training of undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students. The department imparts academic and clinical teaching and research opportunities for students of M.Sc. Psychiatric Nursing. Students of social work & psychology from other universities are posted in our department for short-term training. We also conduct lectures for the students of the Centre for Music Therapy Education & Research (CMTER), SBV. In addition, we provide short-term training to postgraduate residents from other medical specialities such as Dermatology & General Medicine.
