Pharmacology
Courses
The department is primarily involved in training undergraduate MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing students, Allied Health Sciences & Postgraduate students in Pharmacology.Â
Undergraduate Training
The undergraduate students are trained in the rational, safe and effective use of medicines along with the current trends of teaching the basics of clinical research and pharmacovigilance. The practical curriculum in clinical pharmacology attempts to impart skills in prescription writing and criticism, ADR monitoring, understanding drug interactions, dosage calculations and routes of drug administration using mannequin. In experimental pharmacology practicals, the students are exposed to the techniques of animal handling and performing non-lethal animal experiments using simulation software. The department regularly conducts student seminars, symposia, quiz programs, powerpoint competitions and integrated teaching for undergraduates. Group discussions are held for better understanding of topics, involving small batches of 25-30 students. They are also exposed to simulation videos for better understanding of communication skills, P drug concept and Prescription writing.
There is an innovative module on Clinical Pharmacology for the undergraduates to train them on ADR reporting, drug compliance etc. There is also a systematic training program for interns on rational therapeutics, prescription writing, Pharmacovigilance etc.
Postgraduate Training
Postgraduate students are trained in basic as well as applied pharmacology through seminars, journal clubs, presentations on recent advances and group discussions. Practical experiments on intact animals like evaluation of analgesic activity using analgesiometer, Eddy’s hot plate, anticonvulsant activity using convulsiometer, muscle relaxant property using rotarod apparatus, general anaesthesia using ether, sphincter contraction activity by Straub’s test etc are done. Dose response curves (DRCs), demonstration of antagonist activity, cumulative DRCs, bioassays etc. are performed using organ bath and kymograph or electrophysiograph. They are also trained in handling instruments like spectrophotometer. Mock internal exams with theory, practical and viva voce are conducted on a regular basis. Postgraduates are also posted in clinical departments for learning prescription pattern, basics of ECG reading, Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) monitoring, case reports of irrational use of drugs, drug interactions, substance use disorders etc. PGs are encouraged to participate and present papers in conferences and attend CMEs and workshops in pharmacology and allied sciences. Pharmaceutical industry orientation programmes for PGs include visits to GCP, GLP and GMP facilities. PGs have an optional visit to centres using new technologies like Pharmacogenomics, Nanotechnology, Biotechnology research facilities etc.
The department curriculum formulation, development and revisions are conducted by Board of studies. Syllabus formulation of the subject is through using MCI guidelines and other co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.Â
