OPD facilities
The department has adequate OPD consultation rooms, which is air-conditioned. Each consultation room is equipped with the necessary facilities to meet the need. There are separate consultation rooms for males & females. In the case of lab investigation, the department is supported by the hospital centralized laboratory with basic and high yield investigations. We have a comfortable waiting area for the people who accompany the patients.
The department of General Medicine with all the support extended by other clinical, paraclinical and pre-clinical department was able to run “FLU CLINIC” effectively, which was well appreciated by the Director, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Pondicherry.
Ward facilities
There are 250+ general ward beds with 10+ beds with monitors for recording cardiac rhythms, pulse oximeter, pulse rate and respiratory rate. There are separate isolation wards available for patients with infectious diseases. The department has adequate crash cots in separate wards with emergency drugs, equipment with defibrillators to manage unstable patients.
Covid-19 wards
Fully dedicated 200 bedded general wards for stable mild to moderate covid-19 illness was created along with required infrastructure provided by the management of MGMCRI.
An additional 100 bedded oxygen beds were created and utilized for management of Moderate Covid-19 illness.
Medical Intensive care units
There is ample no of intensive care beds to manage critical patients which are equipped with monitors to record cardiac rhythm, pulse oximeter, pulse rate, non-invasive blood pressure monitoring and respiratory rate. There are infusion pumps by which emergency drugs are given by infusion which is frequently monitored by nursing staffs, residents and consultants. This unit has dedicated crash cots with defibrillators for managing unstable patients.
Covid-19 ICU
A dedicated 10 bedded Covid-19 ICU was created for management of Severe Covid-19 illness, which catered nearing 600 patients during the pandemic which lasted in 2020.
High suspect Covid-19 ICU
A dedicated 08 bedded ICU was functional for managing high suspect RT-PCR NEGATIVE but clinically strong suspicious cases of ARDS.
Academic activities
The department has 4 demonstration rooms with a seating capacity of 50 members with complete audio-visual aids to support academic activities. We have a separated library with 200+ books and journals to facilitate the students and the faculty. Since the department actively participates in outreach camps and telemedicine, students have early exposure to community services.
Online classes were conducted for both undergraduates students and postgraduate residents during covid-19 pandemic.
