Courses
The experienced, dedicated and highly qualified faculty of the department are committed in providing quality teaching to Medical, Dental, AHS students and Fellowship in Diabetes Education.
Fellowship in Diabetes Education: A one year full time residential program for B.Sc / M.Sc Nursing faculty was started in the year 2019 after obtaining the Academic council clearance. The curriculum was framed as per the existing SBVU norms and 2 candidates have successfully completed the course.
Undergraduate Teaching
Students are exposed to a wide variety of clinical cases, where they learn how to interact with the patients, elicit history and methods of clinical examination. Faculty members take bedside clinics and demonstrate them the relevant and important clinical signs for a better understanding of the disease process. Rapid refresher courses are conducted for final year MBBS students to revise them the core clinical contents before their university exams.
Due to Covid-19 pandemic, online theory classes as well as scenario based clinical teaching and assessment was done for all undergraduate students. Students were managed in small batches to ensure that there is active discussion and interaction happening among the students and faculty members.
The classes were taken as per the guidelines issued by Medical Council of India and National Medical Mission.
Postgraduate Teaching
During the training, postgraduates are not only expected to provide proper patient care and is also supposed to acquire academic knowledge and skills in the field of General Medicine through various activities listed below.
Case discussion
Case discussion is held thrice a week by senior consultant and residents at a predetermined convenient time at 2.00 PM, Thursday. The postgraduate (usually final year) prepares a case and discusses in detail with the consultant. Interview is then taken by the consultants, on the pattern of final PG examination.
Seminars
Seminars are held once in a week at a predetermined convenient time 2.00PM on all Tuesdays. Postgraduates (1st & 2nd year) will have to present seminars on pre-determined topics by turn.
Journal Clubs
Journal Clubs are held twice in a month at a predetermined convenient time at 2.00 PM Friday. postgraduates (2nd year) will have to present by rotation, the PGs are allotted topics covering recent advances in General medicine. The list is prepared and circulated at the beginning of each session.
The PGs must contact the moderator at least 4 weeks before the proposed seminar and carefully chalk out the outline of the presentation. They must search adequately through the literature and work under the close guidance and supervision of their moderator and rehearse adequately in advance in order to give a satisfactory presentation with in terms of content and delivery.
Before the seminar, the PG is required to submit the properly edited write-up, prepared with the help of the moderator, to all faculty members. The document must have relevant recent references on the topic discussed.
Seminars will be preceded by pre-test evaluation on the pre-determined topic of discussion. The candidate is assessed and given marks on the standardized proforma by senior consultants at the end of seminar presentations.
Dissertation
Postgraduates undergo a series of workshop on how to select a topic for dissertation, write a proper research protocol and understand the principles of ethics in research in the first few months of starting their course. They are encouraged to choose a topic of their interest and are guided by senior faculty members of the department. SBV supports the students by providing them with an atmosphere, equipment, technology and support in all form for the successful conduct of their research work. Students also are encouraged to publish their work, they are trained serially on how to complete dissertation write up, how to convert dissertation into publication.
Training in Super Specialty (Neurology, Cardiology and Nephrology)
PG’s are posted to the Department of Neurology, Nephrology, Cardiology and Critical Care Medicine at MGMCRI for a period of one month, during their second year of post-graduation.
Training in Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiology and Pulmonary Medicine
PGs are made to learn various diseases pertaining to General Medicine in the above departments. They are posted for a period of 15 days each in every department during second year of post-graduation.
Scientific and Academic Forum
The Scientific and Academic Forum (SAF) of MGMCRI provides an excellent opportunity for postgraduates to showcase their clinical work, knowledge and skills. SAF general meeting is conducted once a month where interesting cases, journal club and capsule talks are delivered. Guest lectures are delivered by eminent internal and external faculty members once a month. SAF also provides a great opportunity for students to present their research work every year in the form of conducting “Research Week”. Students of MGMCRI are made to compete within and outside the institute and the best posters and paper presentations are rewarded by certificates and cash prize.
Hospital Death Audit
PGs are involved in preparing the mortality and morbidity reports which are analysed by all the faculty. An external audit to discuss the mortality and morbidity is held once a month, where faculty members and PGs of all the departments assemble to discuss and give their valuable inputs on case management.
Postgraduate teaching
Our goal is to transform the scholars to excel as a competent researcher. Apart from gaining the research techniques and experience, scholars acquire transferable skills to become a prominent international research scholar.
