OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARMENT

The department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology was established in the year 2001. It is a well equipped and fully staffed department and manned by faculties from different parts of India with many years of experience behind them. At present there are 2 Professors, 2 Associate Professors and 5 tutors running the department.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT
  • to impart medicolegal knowledge on different aspects of medicine to students so that they are fully capable to deal with such issues in their clinical practice
  • training on proper medicolegal documentation and examination of cases
  • to facilitate an atmosphere of learning and research

 

FUTURE PLANS OF THE DEPARTMENT
  • To start certificate courses in collaboration with other disciplines like BDS, CIDRF
  • To conduct workshop for Medical Officers of Pondicherry and Tamilnadu in managing ML cases
  • To conduct CME and Forensic Medicine Quiz Competition for undergraduates, interns and PGs of different medical colleges of Pondicherry and beyond annually
  • Proposed workshop on “Autopsy Pathology” Feb- March 2016

 

 

The department has 2 lecture halls and 01 seminar hall with latest audio – visual aids. The department has well equipped museum with numerous medico-legal photographs, wet specimens, models, poisons, bones, weapons and charts. The department also has a research lab to carry out research on forensic serology, histopathology and anthropology. The departmental library has a vast collection of books and journals catering to different aspects of the subject.

  • The department is mainly involved in imparting medico-legal knowledge to the undergraduate and post graduate students
  • The department has a tie – up with the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, IGMCH&RI, Pondicherry
  • UG students are demonstrated autopsy cases
  • PG students are given hands – on training in autopsy

 

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES ORGANIZED BY THE DEPARTMENT:
  • 28 May 2011, the department organized a guest talk “Medicolegal Issues in Emergency Services” by Dr. B.V. Subramaniam, Professor, Dept of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Narayana Medical Institution, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.
  • 28 June, 2014, the department organized a CME titled “E – LAMP – Ethical and Legal Aspects of Medical Practice”
  • The department organized a moot court with the undergraduate students titled “Court room simulation” on 28 June, 2014. The objective was to make the students aware of different proceedings in a court of law.
  • 24 August 2015, the department organized a Quiz competition titled “FMT FORUM 2015 – Intercollegiate Forensic Medicine Quiz Competition” where teams from different medical colleges of Pondicherry participated with zeal and vigour.

 

 

 

The subject is embedded in the IInd MBBS curriculum and taught from 3rd semester to 5th semester. The following topics are broadly covered

  • Medical law and ethics
  • Thanatology / changes after death
  • Clinical Forensic Medicine
  • Forensic Toxicology

Mode of teaching is via lectures, small group discussions, practicals, demonstrations and tutorials. Assessment is by semester exams, monthly tests and viva voce.

The department has 2 postgraduate (MD) seats. Postgraduate case presentations, seminars and journal presentations are held on a regular basis. Besides, the PG students are also encouraged to do research on different topics and make presentations in conferences.

The department has collaboration with Indira Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute, Pondicherry whereby undergraduates are made to observe autopsy cases and post graduates are permitted to do autopsy under the watchful eyes of faculties of both institutes.
